Rigid Big Toes
Hallux limitus/rigidus
This can be either structural or functional. Structural occurs when there is limited ability to pull the big toe upwards when non weightbearing and weightbearing, this can be caused by arthritic changes to the joint.
Functional is when there is adequate ability to pull the big toe up when not weightbearing but limited when weightbearing due to increased force beneath the big toe joint which prevents movement upward of the big toe. This can cause pain to the big toe joints itself or be a cause of symptoms to other areas of the foot, leg and even back.
